Queen of the Dead by WintersKnight Queen of the Dead by WintersKnight
Hel, queen of the underworld in Norse mythology. She is the daughter of Loki and Angrboda and the sister of Fenrir and Jormungandr.

This is what I do when I'm supposed to be packing apparently. Fail. >_>.

The flowers are an interesting touch - there's something unexpectedly sweet about this, like lost innocence.

She's amazing, and so lovely. I don't like it when she's represented as being a full-on monster; you really did a nice job here. :D

I'm glad I'm not the only one who imagines her as a young girl. <3

Thanks so much! I totally agree about how it's not cool when she's a total monster. I'm also glad I'm not the only one. It seems like she'd show her "good" side as youthful and alive as possible to me. It's a better contrast after all.

Love duality type art and she looks just absolutely wonderful. I love the contrast between both sides and those teeth look wonderful as well. The hair is particularly wonderful as well like proper jet black

I'm so close to being able to buy the body I want for this doll 0_0 SO CLOSE. I just got a waitressing job at the IHOP, so I'm hoping I can start making money for art supplies and doll bodies on top of the monthly bills.

I love Hel! :D This is really gorgeous. :) Although I heard that she was half dead on her lower body...However I also read that she was half dead on one side of her face, like this.

They look like Hawthorn or Blackthorn.

But who knows what flowers grow in Hel :)

I'm suspecting some sort of Helish blue hawthorn, yeah. It's always fun when imaginary things look enough like real things to make you wonder if you actually made them up or not. . .

Oh, she has freckles (well, at least half of her face has them...)!
And her eye colour is truly beautiful (well, the one eye...)!
But I like both sides...

I am quite possibly overly fond of freckles in my drawings. I'm pretty sure that just about every character I've created in recent months has at least a few. Hel just seemed to need them in this form.

She looks so peaceful here. It's lovely.

I automatically started drawing her one side like a bog body (blackened and withered) but I like the skeletal interpretation too.

Thank you ^_^. Yeah, I really like your bog-body interpretation too. It's more realistic as far as someone being alive and looking that way. Way I see it, she's probably got a lot of different ways she can show herself. Her da's Loki after all. . . I bet she even has all living and all dead looking versions too.

For some reason she's also played by young Daveigh Chase in my mind >_>. Thank you so much The Ring and Donnie Darko >_<.

I like drawing the skeletal version mostly due to the fact that I'm rather obsessed with skeletons. I tend to draw them as my underdrawing before I get to the regular proper drawing so I find it fun to do the half skeleton face and all.

I agree she would be a master of illusions and shapeshifting considering her heritage.

I can't really decide which depiction I like the most, there are so many to choose from.

Too true. I feel like I just opened some kind of floodgate with the attention I've given her lately. I now just want to draw her and draw her and sculpt her etc etc 0_o.

I'd definitely like to try out some other appearances for her. Like maybe one where she's a bit older and with Ullr. I kinda love the thought of those two really. Especially considering how many people that might piss off! Thor's step-son and Loki's little girl? Not to mention Ullr being married to Skaoi. 0_o Gotta love making waves in Asgard ^__^

The Hel-Ullr pairing is pretty epic. ~Cornelia-Queen says it is like Romeo and Juliet what with the Montagues and Capulets or in this case the Aesir and the Jotnar.

I do too, honestly. I'm definitely a figure draw-er rather than a landscape draw-er. I always feel like I'm being horribly lazy when I don't background things these days though. It's easier with painting (for me anyhow) cause I can start with the background and then layer the figure over top. Unlike with drawing where I have to draw the figure/outlines first then figure out the background to go along with.

Also T_T I fail at sleeping.

I'm totally supposed to be up in like. . . four. . . hours T_T. . . cause I have to pack more. BUT I am instead working on another picture of this fine goddess. Apparently I got inspired.

And again. . . failing at backgroundage. I'm thinking this time I'll maybe go a bit art nouveau or something. . . we'll see. She's older looking in this new one. I may have to call it Belle Morte or something lol.
